The Look Of Love Through Healthy Eyes

Though roses and chocolate are certainly nice, there’s nothing more romantic than gazing into the eyes of your partner. Perhaps more than any other part of the body, the eyes play a major role in romance. Candlelit dinners, a slow dance, a glass of wine in front of the fireplace, all seem designed to facilitate intimate glances. February is the month, to celebrate Valentine’s Day, let’s take a look at the look of love.

In courtship, concern with eyes and eye contact is extreme, which some speculate goes back to our days as primates. As The Nonverbal Dictionary of Gestures, Signs, and Body Language Cues notes, we show an extreme alertness to where others are looking and respond to changes in gaze direction. Unconsciously, we feel compelled to look at objects and body parts that our primate brain finds interesting (e.g., faces, hands, and trees)–and to look away from what it finds distasteful. A mutual gaze brings people together quickly and powerfully, as the physical distance separating them seems to close: think of making eye contact across a crowded room. As we lock eyes with a lovely face, information flows from visual areas of the cerebral cortex to the hypothalamus, which influences our sexual behavior.

Another age-old form of nonverbal-and flirtatious-communication is fluttering the eyelashes. Eyelashes perform much the same function as whiskers do on a cat: they are sensitive to being touched, thus providing a warning that an object (such as an insect) is near the eye. Though their role is functional, long, dark eyelashes are considered a sign of beauty and femininity in most cultures, and so their appearance is sometimes enhanced with mascara, which comes from the Arabic word maskhara, meaning “buffoon.” According to Wikipedia, modern mascara was created in 1913 by a chemist named T. L. Williams for his sister, Mabel. This early mascara was made from coal dust mixed with Vaseline petroleum jelly! The product was a success with Mabel, and Williams began to sell his new product through the mail. He named his company Maybelline: a combination of his sister’s name and “Vaseline” -something to think about next time you’re at the makeup counter or paging through your favorite fashion magazine.

A wink is merely the conscious version of something we all do without thinking: blinking. While we blink to keep our eyes moistened and to remove dirt or other unwanted substances from our eyes, a wink is a deliberate signal, implying a secret understanding held between two people. But even the common blink has its place in the mating ritual, as the brain associates rapid blinking with someone finding you sexually attractive. Blink more yourself and, if the person fancies you back, they will unconsciously match your blinks.

Also, our pupils dilate when we see something (or someone) of interest, and it has long been known that humans (especially females) are judged as more attractive if their pupils are wide open and more dilated than normal. Italian women were once famed for using eyedrops made from an extract of the nightshade plant in order to enlarge their pupils and make their eyes appear more beautiful, thus giving rise to plant’s nickname, belladonna (beautiful lady). In fact, atropine, a chemical found in belladonna, is still used by doctors today to dilate the pupils so that they can examine the retina.

Dilation occurs when the iris (the colored portion of the eye; what we refer to when we say someone is brown-eyed or blue-eyed) contracts or relaxes, thus changing pupil size, depending on the amount of light present. This part of the eye takes its name from the Greek goddess Iris, daughter of Thaumas and the ocean nymph Electra. Iris was the personification of the rainbow, and just as the rainbow unites Earth and heaven, she was also messenger of the gods to men. Human eyes come in almost all the colors of the rainbow; however, blue eyes are relatively rare, as blue eye color is a recessive trait, and the gene must be present (though not necessarily apparent) in both parents for a child to be born with blue eyes.

It is interesting to note that each person’s iris is fixed, in that its markings do not change, making the eyes as unique an indicator of personality as the fingerprint. Perhaps that is another reason we look deep into each other’s eyes when we fall in love: we are trying to read their soul and communicate ours. Whoever first coined the saying “The eyes are the window to the soul”-which has been attributed to everyone from the Roman Cicero, who said “Ut imago est animi voltus sic indices oculi” (The face is a picture of the mind as the eyes are its interpreter) to the old French proverb Les yeux sont le miroir de l’dme (The eyes are the mirror of the soul) – was almost certainly not on a bad date! After all, as the song says, “The look of love is in your eyes.” Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Rebuild Your Vision.
