Q: What Is Astigmatism And Can It Be Changed?

A: Astigmatism is a condition in which your vision at all distances may be blurred or distorted, occurring when there is an irregularity or distortion in the shape of the front surface (cornea) of the eye or of the lens.

Light entering the eye is focused at multiple points on the retina, which may result in double images or a “ghosting” effect.

Have you ever looked through a window pane in an older house? The glass is wavy, but if you look through it at one angle everything on the other side is clear, yet if you look through it at another angle, everything is blurry.

That’s what astigmatism is – it’s not the distance from your eyes, it’s the angle (or direction) of the light that causes the blurriness.

A person can have astigmatism whether or not they have other vision issues, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Astigmatism can greatly interfere with clear seeing. Besides blurring your vision, it can cause double images, distorted vision, headaches, eye strain, neck and shoulder tension, tiredness and eye fatigue.
